Environment - ESM

The P3R unit has been ISO 14001 certified since March 2023, thanks to its environmental commitment.

Environmental protection is also at the heart of our considerations. Since 2019, we have implemented an EMS (Environmental Management System), to improve P3R's environmental management and performance. This EMS enables us to gain a better understanding of the environmental consequences of our Unit's activities, to ensure compliance with regulations, and to reduce environmental impacts and prevent pollution.

Analysis of the regulatory compliance of our facilities and processes, and analysis of the environmental impact of our activities are the two starting points for implementing the project.

The certification process consists of several stages:

  • Diagnosis through an environmental analysis carried out by the PPE: assessment of the impact of the company's location and activities on the environment, such as management of ordinary and hazardous waste, noise, visual, water and air pollution, consumption of raw materials and energy, respect for flora and fauna, etc.
  • Set improvement targets in line with the unit's policy and resources (technical, financial, human).
  • Implementation of actions, summarized in an “action plan”, within a timeframe set by the unit in consultation with the EMS coordinator.
  • Measuring progress with quantified indicators (energy consumption, water, biodiversity, waste production, etc.).
  • Sustain the approach through ISO 14001 certification.

The expected effects of the experimental schemes are as follows:

  • The creation of a group dynamic: the collective management of an EMS will encourage the development of networking, exchanges between EUs and a restructuring of the EUs themselves (management) around an inescapable subject; a responsible attitude towards the environment.
  • Exemplarity in terms of compliance with regulations, risk management, transparency with staff, partners, local residents and environmental protection.
  • The possibility of collective certification to gain recognition for our work, attract new research partners and ensure the European and even international influence of INRAE's experimental facilities.
  • Strengthening the EU's position in their regional industry by exchanging with companies involved in the same approach, and thus developing new collaborations, sharing experience and skills, and asserting INRAE's position.
  • The implementation and monitoring of relevant indicators for the various objectives are fully in line with the Institute's needs (Plant Protection Treatment Frequency Index, water and energy consumption, waste production, etc.). The use of these indicators will provide food for thought, enabling us to situate ourselves in relation to other sectors and estimate the environmental cost of our experimentation activities, all with a view to continuous improvement.
