Crop & forage division

The crop & forage division unit is responsible for producing fodder to feed the Unit animals, and for farming the Unit crops. Since 2018, research projects have been carried out in favour of an agro-ecological transition, and the integration between vegetal and animal productions.

P3R has 620 hectares of usable agricultural land, divided in 300 hectares of permanent grassland for fodder production and 320 hectares of crops of which 90 hectares are tested for several agroecological practices.

Four staff work on the crop and forage division. The work is seasonal, with a peak between June and August.

Since 2018, P3R has been part of the DEPHY EXPE network of systems trials.

The agricultural sector is facing numerous challenges: meeting the demand for food resources in terms of quantity and quality, ensuring an income for farmers and the sustainability of the sector, environmental challenges (preserving the quality of the environment, resources and biodiversity) and social challenges (limiting health risks for farmers and guaranteeing good working conditions). Agroecology would enable to adapt to these challenges by mobilising ecological processes within agroecosystems at different scales, so as to reduce the dependence of agricultural systems on inputs. In order to test the validity of this approach, P3R is involved in several agroecological projects : ABC, ABY, SOBRIETE and TETRAE-Solanaé projects.
