Livestock Phenotyping for Sustainable Agro-eological Systems (LiPH4SAS)

INRAE joined the approach Livestock Phenotyping for Sustainable Agro-eological Systems (LiPH4SAS).

LIPH4SAS is a research infrastructure co-directed by the INRAE departments Animal Genetic (GA) and Animal Physiology and Breeding Systems (PHASE). It has been included in the national research infrastructures roadmap since 2021. P3R is one of the ten INRAE entities constituting the LIPH4SAS infrastructure.

Phenotypes are measured at different scales, from the detailed exploration of biological functions on small numbers of animals (vertical phenotyping), to non-invasive measurements on large numbers (horizontal phenotyping). The health, genetic and physiological status of the animals is precisely known. They come from commercial populations or from original populations enabling the study of specific biological functions.

Phenotype measurements are standardized and robust, and carried out under a variety of finely characterized rearing conditions, enabling the study of genotype x environment interactions or animal responses to environmental variations. Protocols are designed to ensure reproducibility of results, and are conducted in strict compliance with animal welfare and animal experimentation regulations (3R rule - Reduce, Refine, Replace).

LIPH4SAS infrastructure also has a technological innovation mission, notably for the development of non-invasive methods, alternatives to animal experimentation, training and technology transfer.
